The breeze blew in from the sea

I climbed to the cliff top
the breeze blew in from the sea
gulls curious now flew in too
inspecting me mid flight
baffled that I was at their height
and not facing the wind
raised their beaks in disdain
cawed noisily and swept away

Long absent from this shore
my bones had told me
that this longing, this yearning
within me was the call of the wild
I knew that language well
that salty tang of the ocean
a constant rhythm of the waves
the beating of the surf, and you

We came all those years ago
borne in a rickety horse drawn dray
in now what seems today
to be a thousand summers ago
we spoke the same language
that of a stuttering teenage love
but a love we could not sustain
now I remember you once again

  2. Those encounters of the youth.. How they can come back in a flash.. A place, a piece of music or a perfume. The memory might sting a little.. But we never want to be without them.

  4. those early loves are hard to sustain...we burn so bright and so fast and dont understand the ways of love yet to make it endure...they do make for some great memories though....

  5. The call of a wild within a person is forever alive, and sometimes when we remember back we feel........

  6. Unsustainable love is so common in our world. I wonder at it, for my parents were married for 56 years, and had my mother not died suddenly and unexpectedly nearly a dozen years ago, they would be married still.

  7. When I remember teenage love, I ask myself what the other remembers, or even if. It is moments like the one you describe that bring this kind of memories.

  10. To know a longing/fulfillment so well that you do not need the approval of your flock is to be blessed indeed. With it you have the memory too, almost more than we can ever expect. Someday I will see you there in the wild--I would hope somewhere on the mid California coastline, unless you would suggest another location.

  15. Interesting how even the smell of a place revisited can bring light to old memories assumed forgotten.

  16. *claps hands* this was sweet and nostalgic. I miss the beach/ocean scenery. Summer's almost over and haven't visited MD's beaches yet.

  17. I can so relate to this. Having lived in the same city since I was 10, I frequently find myself in places that call to mind old loves. It's a sweet nostalgia.

  23. This 'breeze from the sea' comes again and again to challenge us, to be the catalyst of our new memories...but it'll be always like the first love, the best, this calling of wild...
